Ballygiblin National School is a Green School that promotes long-term, whole-school action for the environment. Our students on the committee lead the programme, with support from staff in the school and from the wider community. To date we have received four flags for our work on reducing “Litter and Waste”, reducing “Energy” consumption, decreasing “Water” consumption and promoting "Travel" in environmentally friendly ways. Our latest flag for BIODIVERSITY was achieved in 2023! :-) We are currently working on our LITTER AND WASTE REVISITED FLAG.

We engage in many activities that focus on “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”. For example there is daily reducing, recycling and reusing of Paper & Plastic. We also engage with daily composting using our composter, the “Pig”. We bought a new pig in September 2023 as our old one needs some TLC!!! It will make a return once it has been fixed up! REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE! Children are in charge of monitoring the Paper & Plastic bins and also for daily composting using the “Pig”. It is important that our sensory garden in our school courtyard is managed effectively as it is an important resource. Therefore, we practice rainwater harvesting for watering the many plants in our garden. We use a solar powered water fountain during the summer that is replenished using harvested rainwater. There are also many other recycling initiatives such as termly recycling of clothes organised by the Parents Association and WEE battery recycling.
